The crash occurred early in the morning and has brought traffic to a standstill, prompting urgent advisories for motorists to seek alternative routes while emergency crews respond and investigators work to determine the cause.

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) reported that the collision took place between Nacogdoches Road and Lookout Road at approximately 6:04 a.m., involving a large commercial truck that jackknifed across the eastbound lanes of Loop 1604.

As a result, all eastbound traffic has been halted, with vehicles backed up for miles and drivers advised to avoid the area.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and SAPD confirmed that the severity of the accident required the complete closure of Loop 1604’s eastbound main lanes, affecting the rush hour commute.

Traffic monitoring systems indicated backups stretching as far back as Green Mountain Road, and authorities warned that delays could extend for several hours while wreckage is cleared and the scene is secured.

Motorists normally using this section of Loop 1604 are being urged to divert onto alternate routes such as Judson Road, Evans Road, or other northside thoroughfares to bypass the shutdown.

Emergency responders remain on the scene, coordinating with TxDOT crews to manage traffic and facilitate cleanup.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been officially released, but early traffic reports suggest the 18-wheeler may have lost control and jackknifed, blocking traffic in both directions of the eastbound lanes.

Local law enforcement is investigating all aspects of the incident, including weather conditions, vehicle speed, and roadway surface at the time of the collision.

No official statement regarding injuries has yet been issued, and authorities have not confirmed whether any motorists involved sustained serious harm.

First responders, including police, fire crews, and medical units, are on the scene to provide any necessary assistance and to ensure public safety while recovery efforts are underway.

In response to this disruption, officials from TxDOT and SAPD are advising motorists to:

  • Avoid Loop 1604 East between Nacogdoches Road and Lookout Road if possible
  • Use frontage roads or alternate highways such as IH-35 or Judson Road
  • Allow extra travel time if travel in the region is necessary
  • Stay updated through local traffic advisories and navigation apps that reflect real-time conditions.

The closure comes amid forecasts of possible winter weather in the region, which could compound travel conditions and complicate response efforts. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution if roads are slick or icy.
