A woman has died after being struck by a vehicle on Loop 410 near the Texas 151 interchange in San Antonio, Texas, authorities confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, prompting the closure of all northbound lanes as emergency crews work at the scene.

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) said the collision occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, when the woman was attempting to cross the busy interstate.

The incident took place near the 500 block of Southwest Loop 410, close to State Highway 151, on the city’s West Side.

According to preliminary information from the SAPD and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the woman was struck by a truck travelling eastbound on Loop 410.

The truck driver remained at the scene and rendered aid following the collision, but the victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

In the aftermath, all northbound lanes of Loop 410 were closed to allow investigators and first responders to work safely, with traffic diverted at the Marbach Road exit.

TxDOT and police have urged motorists to seek alternate routes and expect significant delays through the evening rush period.

Authorities say that the exact circumstances leading to the pedestrian crossing the highway are still under investigation.

SAPD officers and collision analysts are reviewing available evidence, including roadway camera footage and witness statements, to determine contributing factors such as visibility, traffic signal timing, pedestrian behaviour, vehicle speed, and potential impairment.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct a formal autopsy to confirm the victim’s identity and establish the official cause and manner of death.

Police did not immediately release further details about the woman’s identity, pending family notification.

Northbound Loop 410, a major artery for commuters headed toward San Antonio’s Northwest Side, remained shut for several hours, with authorities warning of extended travel times on nearby thoroughfares.

TxDOT has been updating motorists via traffic alerts and recommended detours, citing the need to prioritize safety for first responders and investigators working on the interstate.

The closure affected peak-hour traffic significantly, with backups reported along feeder roads and nearby interchanges.

Drivers were advised to use alternative corridors such as Marbach Road, State Highway 151 frontage roads, and local streets until northbound Loop 410 reopens.

Pedestrian fatalities on high-speed urban highways like Loop 410 are rare but often tragic.

Road safety experts say that interstate highways are not designed for pedestrian crossings, and people on foot face extremely high risk due to speed, lane width, and limited sight distance. Emergency responders emphasise the importance of:

  • Using designated overpasses and underpasses for pedestrians
  • Avoiding walking along or across high-speed roadways
  • Ensuring visibility if walking near roadways at night
  • Following all traffic signals and signage

Authorities have not ruled out whether a crosswalk or other pedestrian infrastructure exists nearby, noting that additional context is part of the active crash review.
