A fatal road accident on Saturday morning, 31 January 2026, claimed the lives of three members of a family when their motorcycle collided with a high-speed bus on the Balughata–Chaitanyapur state highway in East Midnapore district, West Bengal police confirmed.

The crash also left several passengers on the bus seriously injured and disrupted traffic on one of the district’s major transport routes.
The deceased have been identified as Arup Mondal (52), his wife Pratima (45), and their 13-year-old daughter Sujita, residents of Krishnanagar village within Sutahata police station limits.
The family was travelling together on a motorcycle toward Brajalalchak when the collision occurred around 10:45 a.m. near Ghosher More.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the motorcycle lost control and veered into the opposite lane, placing it directly in the path of a Kukrahati-bound private bus moving at high speed.
The bus driver was unable to avoid the crash, and after striking the motorcycle, the vehicle ploughed into roadside railings, causing severe damage to its front cabin.
Local resident Srikrishna Adhikari, who was among the first on the scene, described hearing a “deafening crash” and finding the family “lying in a pool of blood.” Emergency personnel had to employ a crane to extricate the trapped bus driver from the mangled front cabin before he could be taken for medical care.
All three family members were declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. At least four bus passengers remain in critical condition, and multiple others suffered injuries, prompting ongoing treatment at regional medical facilities.
Traffic on the state highway was disrupted for nearly two hours following the collision as officials from the police, highway patrol, and emergency services worked to clear the wreckage and manage the scene.
The bus has been seized by police, and an official investigation into the cause of the crash has been initiated.
Investigators are reviewing initial traffic patterns and eyewitness statements to determine whether vehicle speed, road conditions, or rider control loss contributed to the tragedy.
The early indication that the motorcycle lost control on a busy state highway points to the ongoing risks faced by two-wheeler riders in mixed-traffic environments.
Collisions between motorcycles and larger vehicles remain a persistent hazard in many parts of India, especially on rural and semi-urban highways where speed differentials between light and heavy vehicles are high.
Vulnerable road users, such as two-wheeler riders and pillion passengers, are particularly at risk given their limited physical protection compared to bus or truck occupants.
This tragic incident highlights the need for:
- Enhanced enforcement of speed and lane discipline on state highways
- Targeted awareness campaigns for motorcycle safety
- Infrastructure improvements such as dedicated lanes and clearer markings
- Stricter training and oversight of drivers of heavy passenger vehicles
