At least three people died on the spot, while others were critically injured in a series of violent impacts involving SUVs and heavy trucks on busy city roads and the adjacent National Highway-16 (NH-16).

The incidents some occurring within city limits and others on major arterial routes have once again drawn attention to concerns over high-speed driving, irresponsible overtaking, and urban road safety enforcement in Odisha’s capital and surrounding districts.

In a devastating collision on NH-16 between Gangapada and Pitapalli, a speeding SUV rammed into a slow-moving trailer truck from behind, killing three occupants instantly according to preliminary police reports.

A fourth person was critically injured and rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for emergency treatment.

The force of the impact was so severe that the SUV was badly mangled, prompting highway authorities to temporarily divert traffic as rescue and clearance operations were underway.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released, and police have registered a case as investigations continue into the exact circumstances of the crash.

Within a 24-hour period, two separate accidents involving Mahindra Thar SUVs claimed four lives in Bhubaneswar, local law enforcement confirmed.

In the latest of these, three young occupants of a Thar died when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck on the same NH-16 stretch after reportedly travelling at speeds exceeding 100 km/h. A further occupant sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.

Hours earlier, another Thar SUV struck a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle near Capital Hospital Square, killing an 18-year-old rider identified as Raja Pedini and injuring two others.

The SUV’s driver fled the scene before police arrived.

Authorities have seized the vehicle and launched a probe to identify the exact driver at the time of the crash.

These tragic incidents occurred alongside other traffic mishaps reported across Bhubaneswar on the same day, including separate collisions involving speeding SUVs and motorcycles that left additional individuals injured.

Police are pursuing absconding drivers in some cases, with family members alleging that reckless driving and possible alcohol influence may have played a role in at least one of the crashes.

Local road safety advocates have highlighted recurring issues including high speeds on urban thoroughfares, insufficient enforcement of helmet and protective gear laws, and driver negligence all risk factors that compound the likelihood of serious collisions in densely populated areas.

The Bhubaneswar City Police and Odisha Highway Patrol units have stepped up patrolling and response efforts.

Investigators are combing video footage, eyewitness accounts, and vehicle telemetry to determine accountability and to support potential charges against fleeing drivers.

Traffic officials have also urged motorists to adhere to speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking, ensure proper vehicle maintenance, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances, standard road safety directives reinforced following a series of recent road tragedies.
