According to eyewitnesses, the high-speed contest, reportedly organised by young men suspected to be internet fraudsters, locally referred to as “Yahoo boys”, spiralled out of control when an unregistered Lexus involved in the race skidded off the road at high speed. The car rammed directly into a roadside shop, instantly killing two pedestrians and trapping the occupants of the vehicle in the wreckage.
“It happened so fast. The car was moving at a terrifying speed. Suddenly, it lost control, smashed into the shop, and we saw people on the ground, not moving. It was horrific,” a local source told RoadKing.ng, requesting anonymity.
The impact claimed the lives of Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo, who were standing by the roadside. The driver and two other male occupants of the Lexus sustained critical injuries and were rushed by emergency responders to the Isara State Hospital. Sadly, one of the injured victims died during treatment, while the other referred to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OASTH), Sagamu, also succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the incident, noting that the driver’s identity remains unknown. TRACE investigations revealed that the Lexus was heading towards Fidiwo when the driver lost control at the notorious Owolowo point due to excessive speed.
“This is another needless loss of lives due to reckless driving and illegal racing. We keep warning against it, yet some drivers treat our roads like racetracks,” Akinbiyi lamented.

RoadKing Analysis & Safety Warning
This latest crash underscores the deadly consequences of illegal street racing and overspeeding on Nigerian roads.
