The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has taken into custody the driver of a Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV following a distressing incident on Sunday, April 28.

The driver, while engrossed in the use of a mobile phone, collided with a commercial bus in the vicinity of Gbagada in Lagos.

In the aftermath of the collision, LASTMA swiftly intervened, apprehending the driver and attending to the victims.

A total of five individuals were harmed in the accident, with four of them sustaining severe injuries necessitating urgent medical attention.

These injured parties were promptly conveyed to the Gbagada General Hospital for treatment.

Among the injured was a 3-year-old girl who suffered a head injury, and the bus driver who sustained fractures in multiple parts of their body.

The gravity of the injuries underscores the importance of adhering to road safety regulations and avoiding distractions while operating a vehicle.

In response to the incident, LASTMA efficiently managed the situation by promptly removing the two vehicles involved from the expressway to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.

The agency emphasizes the critical need for all motorists, particularly commercial bus drivers, to refrain from using mobile phones while driving.

This precautionary measure is essential to prevent avoidable accidents and safeguard the well-being of all road users.

Upon conducting a preliminary investigation, the LASTMA has ascertained that the driver of the Mercedes-Benz SUV with license plate number JJJ 219 XU lost control of the vehicle due to engaging in a phone call.

This loss of control resulted in a collision with a stationary Volkswagen Commercial bus bearing license plate number APP 46 GZ, which was parked on the roadside for battery repair.

“LASTMA personnel apprehended the driver of the Benz car (JJJ 219 XU) immediately and handed him over to police officers from Alonge Police Station at Oworonsoki, present at the accident scene,” Mr. Adebayo stated.

“LASTMA personnel promptly cleared the two vehicles from the expressway to ensure smooth traffic flow on Gbagada Bridge towards Gbagada Express Way.”

In response to this unfortunate and preventable incident, Honorable Sola Giwa, the esteemed Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, has expressed his heartfelt sympathies to the individuals who sustained injuries as a consequence of the accident.

Emphasizing the paramount importance of safety on the roads, he has underscored the imperative for all motorists, particularly those operating commercial buses, to refrain from using mobile phones while driving.

Furthermore, he has urged drivers to exercise caution and avoid excessive speeding when embarking on journeys within or outside the confines of Lagos.

It is imperative that all drivers adhere to these directives to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users.

By prioritizing safety measures and exercising vigilance, we can collectively contribute to the prevention of such regrettable incidents in the future.
