The driver of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) conveying British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing star, Anthony Joshua, during the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two members of his entourage has been discharged from the hospital and may soon face prosecution for reckless driving.

Findings by The Guardian revealed that the driver, who was injured in the crash, was recently discharged from Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where Anthony Joshua is also receiving medical care following injuries sustained in the incident.

Although Joshua’s condition has been described as stable, investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are now intensifying.

According to sources familiar with the case, the driver has since reported to law enforcement authorities and provided a formal statement regarding the incident.

Officials disclosed that the driver could be charged for reckless driving, depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations being coordinated by the Nigerian Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the driver has been discharged and is cooperating with investigators.

“Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital and he is currently giving his statement,”. Hundeyin said.

Meanwhile, officials of the FRSC at the Sagamu Interchange, where the accident occurred, confirmed that the truck involved in the crash remains impounded as investigations continue.

An FRSC source further revealed that the driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene immediately after the collision and has since been declared wanted by authorities.

Earlier reports by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) indicated that preliminary investigations pointed to a tyre failure as the immediate cause of the accident.

According to TRACE, the SUV in which Joshua and his team were travelling suffered a burst front tyre on the passenger side, leading to loss of control and eventual collision with a stationary truck parked along the highway.

Providing further insight into the incident, TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi told reporters that excessive speed also played a critical role in the crash.

“From the preliminary investigation conducted, there was overspeeding on the part of the SUV Anthony Joshua was travelling in. In the course of that, the front tyre on the passenger side burst, which caused the driver to lose control before the vehicle swerved and rammed into the stationary truck,” Akinbiyi explained.

He added that evidence at the scene strongly suggested excessive speed prior to impact.

The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, has long been associated with fatal road accidents, often linked to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and illegally parked trucks.

Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of speed limits and improved regulation of heavy-duty vehicles along the corridor.

Following the crash, Anthony Joshua, 36, was rushed to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where doctors confirmed that he is in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

However, the incident turned fatal for two members of his team — Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele — who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Matchroom Boxing, Joshua’s promotional company, confirmed the deaths in a statement filled with grief.

“With profound sadness, it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away,” the statement read.

Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn also expressed his sorrow, describing the loss as devastating. “With the heaviest of hearts.

Two great men. Rest in eternal peace, Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone affected,” Hearn said.

As investigations continue, the tragedy has once again raised concerns about road safety standards, driver responsibility, and enforcement gaps on Nigeria’s major highways.

Authorities say anyone found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law, as the nation mourns lives lost in yet another avoidable road disaster.
