According to local authorities, the incident occurred late Sunday along a busy stretch between Sectors 5 and 8, an area known for heavy evening traffic and mixed road users including cyclists, tricycles, and electric rickshaws.

Eyewitnesses said a fast-moving car lost control and violently rammed into an e-rickshaw before ploughing into a cyclist riding nearby.

The impact was so severe that the e-rickshaw was crushed, throwing its occupants onto the road.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes, but three victims were pronounced dead on arrival.

Several others sustained injuries of varying degrees and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police officials confirmed that preliminary investigations point to over-speeding as a major factor in the crash. Officers are also examining whether alcohol or distraction played a role.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of their families.

The driver of the car has been taken into custody for questioning, and the vehicle involved has been impounded for forensic examination.

Traffic police say CCTV footage from surrounding intersections is being reviewed to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine the exact speed of the vehicle at the time of impact.

Rising Concern Over Urban Speeding

The crash has reignited concerns about reckless driving in residential and mixed-use zones, where vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, and rickshaw operators are most at risk.

Road safety advocates are calling for:

  • Stricter speed enforcement in city corridors
  • Installation of speed cameras and traffic-calming measures
  • Better lane separation for non-motorized transport
  • Increased public awareness campaigns on the dangers of speeding

RoadKing Safety Insight

Urban roads are not race tracks. When motorists exceed speed limits, the margin for error disappears, and vulnerable road users pay the highest price. Every driver has a responsibility to slow down, stay alert, and respect all categories of road users.
