Telangana Among India’s States with Highest NH Black Spots

New data tabled in the Lok Sabha has revealed that Telangana ranks third nationally in India for the number of accident-prone black spots on National Highways (NHs) with 1,535 identified hazardous locations where crashes occur frequently, road safety authorities confirmed today.

The figure places the state second in South India, behind Tamil Nadu but ahead of most other states in the union. 

Black spots stretches of road typically about 500 m in length where multiple crashes with injuries or fatalities have occurred pose a significant risk to motorists because of problems such as poor road geometry, inadequate signage or lighting, and unsafe junctions.

According to the latest government figures:

• Telangana has 1,535 black spots on its national highways — a large share of which have seen frequent accidents over recent years.  
• Short-term safety fixes — such as improved signage, rumble strips, and lane markings — have been carried out at 82 % of these locations.  
• However, long-term engineering solutions — like road realignments, junction redesigns, grade separators and service roads — have been completed at only about 33.6 % of these sites.  

Nationally, states such as Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and West Bengal also reported high numbers of accident-prone black spots on NHs in the same data. 

Why Black Spots Remain Dangerous

Black spots are a major contributor to fatal and grievous road accidents because they often share common features:

• Inadequate signage or reflective markings
• Poor lighting at night or in low visibility
• Unsafe curves or blind approaches
• Congested junctions or weaving traffic patterns
• Sudden changes in road width or grade  

Traffic and road safety experts say that while short-term fixes like rumble strips and safety signs can improve awareness, permanent engineering solutions are essential for eliminating these high-risk locations and preventing repeat crashes. 

Government and Road Safety Response

Road safety authorities in Telangana have acknowledged the persistent risks these spots pose, especially in high-traffic freight and commuter corridors.

Experts emphasise that effective long-term corrective actions such as improving road alignment, widening shoulders, reconstructing intersections, and making service roads are critical to reducing crashes and saving lives. 

In addition, coordinated efforts between road transport agencies, law enforcement, and local governments are seen as vital to addressing the root causes of accidents at these locations, beyond temporary measures like signs and paint.
