At least 14 people have lost their lives and 28 others sustained injuries following a devastating head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck along Uganda’s busy Kampala–Gulu Highway.

The fatal crash occurred on the night of Tuesday, July 7, at Kulu Otit Village in Bobi Sub-county, Omoro District.

According to preliminary findings released by Uganda Police, the passenger bus was travelling towards Gulu City when the driver reportedly attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the highway.

Police said the bus driver, who was allegedly speeding, lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided head-on with an oncoming truck.

The impact destroyed the front sections of both vehicles and left several passengers trapped in the wreckage.

Emergency responders, police officers, and local residents worked through the night to rescue survivors and recover victims.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of excessive speed, night-time driving, and the need for motorists to remain vigilant, particularly on major highways where pedestrian activity is common.

RoadKing Safety Reminder

Every road user has a role to play in preventing crashes.

Drivers should:

  • Obey posted speed limits.
  • Reduce speed in populated areas and near trading centres.
  • Stay alert for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
  • Avoid risky manoeuvres that could lead to loss of vehicle control.
  • Ensure vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long-distance journeys.

Road crashes are preventable when traffic laws are respected and safe driving practices are consistently followed.
