Seven Killed in Early-Morning Lorry and SUV Collision in India’s Karnataka State

At least seven people have been killed and two others seriously injured following a devastating collision between a lorry and a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district in southern India.
The fatal crash occurred during the early hours of Thursday on a major highway, according to local police.
The violent impact left both vehicles extensively damaged, with several occupants trapped inside the MUV.
Emergency responders, assisted by local residents, carried out rescue operations to free those trapped in the wreckage.
The injured victims were immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving emergency medical treatment.
Authorities said preliminary investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the collision.
Investigators are examining several possible factors, including:
- Excessive speed
- Driver fatigue
- Poor visibility
- Mechanical failure
- Other circumstances that may have contributed to the crash.
Police have withheld the identities of the deceased until their next of kin have been formally notified.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the persistent road safety challenges on India’s highways.
Collisions involving heavy-duty trucks and passenger vehicles remain a significant cause of fatalities across the country, particularly during overnight and early-morning travel when visibility is reduced and driver fatigue is more common.
Road safety experts continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to:
- speed limits
- ensuring vehicles are properly maintained
- avoiding distracted driving
- taking adequate rest before embarking on long-distance journeys.
Police have launched a full investigation and appealed to eyewitnesses or anyone with relevant information to assist in establishing the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
As investigations continue, authorities have urged all road users to exercise caution, remain alert behind the wheel, and observe traffic regulations to help prevent similar tragedies.
