A tragic road crash involving a commercial tricycle and a truck has claimed the life of a tricycle rider and left two other people injured along the busy Sango–Ijoko Road in Ogun State.

The fatal collision, which occurred during normal traffic operations, has once again highlighted the growing safety concerns surrounding commercial transportation on one of Ogun State’s busiest road corridors.

According to preliminary reports, the crash involved a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep, and a truck traveling along the Sango–Ijoko Road.

The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the tricycle extensively damaged. The rider sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead, while two passengers suffered varying degrees of injuries.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as motorists and residents rushed to assist the victims before emergency responders arrived.

The injured victims were rescued from the wreckage and transported to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.

Security personnel and emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to control traffic, evacuate the victims, and remove the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

The deceased rider’s body was later evacuated after the necessary procedures were completed.

As of the time of this report, authorities have not officially released the identity of the deceased pending notification of family members.

Officials have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Investigators are expected to examine several factors, including:

  • The speed of both vehicles.
  • Whether either driver violated traffic regulations.
  • The condition of the road.
  • Possible mechanical failure.
  • Driver visibility and reaction time.

The findings of the investigation will determine whether negligence or other contributing factors played a role in the collision.

Commercial tricycles have become a vital means of transportation across many Nigerian communities, particularly where larger buses cannot easily operate.

However, safety experts continue to express concern over the vulnerability of tricycle operators and passengers, especially when sharing roads with heavy-duty trucks and articulated vehicles.

Unlike passenger cars, tricycles provide minimal protection during collisions, making occupants far more susceptible to serious injuries or death in high-impact crashes.

Many crashes involving tricycles and heavy trucks occur because of:

  • Unsafe overtaking.
  • Excessive speed.
  • Failure to maintain safe following distances.
  • Poor lane discipline.
  • Limited visibility around large vehicles.

Road safety experts advise tricycle operators to avoid driving in the blind spots of trucks and maintain adequate distance from heavy-duty vehicles, especially on highways and busy urban roads.

Truck drivers are also urged to exercise greater caution when operating in areas with high concentrations of commercial tricycles and motorcycles.

Every road user has a shared responsibility to prevent avoidable tragedies.
