Two people have lost their lives following a tragic road crash involving a Mack truck and a Peugeot J5 bus at Ogere Junction along the Ijebu Ode–Benin Expressway in Ogun State.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5:10 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command.

The crash involved a white Mack truck bearing registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus, whose registration number was yet to be identified.

The FRSC disclosed that four adult males were involved in the crash. Sadly, two of the occupants died from injuries sustained in the collision, while the remaining two escaped without injuries.

According to the Ogun State FRSC spokesperson, Florence Okpe, preliminary findings indicate that wrongful route usage (route violation) and excessive speeding were the likely causes of the crash.

The impact of the collision caused the Peugeot J5 bus to burst into flames, completely destroying its front section before emergency responders could bring the situation under control.

FRSC rescue personnel reportedly arrived at the crash scene within minutes of receiving the distress call. Officers immediately began traffic management operations by diverting vehicles to the opposite carriageway to reduce congestion while recovery efforts continued.

The bodies of the deceased victims were later evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Force Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and deposited at a nearby mortuary.

FRSC Urges Motorists to Obey Traffic Rules

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to strictly comply with traffic regulations.

He warned drivers against speeding and driving against traffic, particularly during periods of poor visibility and on slippery road surfaces, stressing that such dangerous practices remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes in Nigeria.

The Sector Commander reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to safer highways through continuous enforcement, public education campaigns, and prompt emergency response.

He also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, maintain safe driving speeds, and exercise greater caution before and during every journey.

Road Crash Statistics Raise Concern

The latest tragedy comes just days after the Ogun State FRSC revealed alarming crash statistics for the state.

According to the Corps, 415 road traffic crashes were recorded across Ogun State between January and May 2026, resulting in 161 fatalities and leaving 1,007 people injured.

The figures highlight the urgent need for stricter compliance with traffic regulations and increased road safety awareness among all categories of road users.
