A man wanted in connection with an alleged kidnapping in Wilson County has been arrested after leading law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed pursuit that exceeded 130 mph along Interstate 95 before ending in a fiery crash in Halifax County.

The dramatic pursuit, which involved multiple law enforcement agencies, brought traffic to a standstill as officers worked to apprehend the suspect while minimizing the risk to other motorists.

Authorities said the chase concluded only after the suspect’s vehicle crashed and caught fire.
According to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, investigators were searching for the Wilson man in connection with a reported kidnapping when officers located the suspect’s vehicle.

When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over and accelerated onto Interstate 95, reaching speeds of more than 130 mph.

During the pursuit, authorities say the suspect drove recklessly, creating an extreme danger for:

  • Other motorists using Interstate 95,
  • Commercial truck drivers,
  • Families travelling the highway,
  • Responding law enforcement officers.

The chase continued for several miles before the suspect lost control, causing the vehicle to crash. Moments later, the vehicle became engulfed in flames. Despite the fire, officers were able to safely take the suspect into custody.

Investigators said the pursuit stemmed from an active kidnapping investigation involving the suspect from Wilson.

Authorities have not yet released full details about the alleged kidnapping, but confirmed the investigation remains active. Additional criminal charges may be filed as detectives continue gathering evidence.

Images from the scene showed the suspect’s vehicle heavily damaged after the crash and subsequent fire.

Firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze while deputies secured the scene and diverted traffic around the crash site.

Fortunately, no injuries to deputies or members of the public have been reported in connection with the pursuit, according to information released so far.

RoadKing.ng Safety Insight

High-speed police pursuits are among the most dangerous incidents on public highways because they expose innocent road users to significant risk.

At speeds above 130 mph (about 209 km/h):

  • Vehicle stopping distances increase dramatically.
  • Tire failure becomes more likely.
  • Driver reaction time is greatly reduced.
  • A minor steering error can lead to catastrophic crashes.
  • The severity of any collision rises sharply due to the enormous kinetic energy involved.

Motorists who encounter emergency pursuits should:

  • Stay calm.
  • Safely move to the right when possible.
  • Never attempt to follow or record the pursuit.
  • Obey instructions from law enforcement officers.
