The incident occurred at about 8:15 a.m. local time near the FM-2536/Old Pearsall Road exit, according to officials. The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) and San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) were among the first responders on the scene.

The bus was en route from a district school when it flipped on an access ramp, throwing the morning commute into chaos as traffic backed up for miles.

Emergency crews evaluated all passengers at the scene. Five students and the bus driver were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, while the rest of the students were treated by medics and released to waiting family members or taken to Southwest Legacy High School for pickup.

Authorities closed portions of Loop 410 including the affected access ramp and frontage road leading to major backups extending toward Ray Ellison Drive throughout the late morning.

Traffic management personnel were deployed to direct motorists around the scene while the bus was stabilized, occupants checked, and roadways cleared.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and both the SAFD and SWISD police are conducting investigations to assess contributing factors, including possible road conditions, vehicle control issues, and any involvement with other traffic ahead of the rollover.

A spokesperson for SWISD said the district is working closely with emergency services and family members affected by the crash and thanked first responders for their quick action.
No serious injuries have been reported, and all students were accounted for after the incident.

Local school district officials had previously announced delayed start times earlier that morning due to extreme cold weather and hazardous road conditions across the region, part of community precautions aimed at protecting students during inclement weather.

What This Means for School Transport Safety

While no major injuries were recorded, the rollover highlights longstanding concerns about student transport safety during extreme weather and calls for continued vigilance from school districts, transport authorities, parents, and drivers.

Winter storms and treacherous conditions have plagued South Texas roads in recent days, and officials remind drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed, and allow extra stopping distance, especially near school routes and highway ramps where surface ice may persist.
