The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) and state police confirmed that both northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 between Exits 91 and 92 were affected, causing significant delays for commuters and freight traffic.
The crash was first reported at about 5:39 a.m. when emergency responders were dispatched to the scene near Exit 91.
A tractor-trailer jackknifed, creating a hazardous situation that closed northbound I-95 and later prompted the closure of the southbound side between Exits 92 and 93 as well.
Early reports from Connecticut State Police indicated that no injuries had been reported from the crash at the time of the closure, though investigations remain ongoing.
Police advised motorists to seek alternate routes and expect delays as crews worked to clear the roadway.
The crash comes amid lingering winter weather effects from recent Arctic cold conditions that have impacted Connecticut and the broader Northeast region.
Cold temperatures, residual ice, and slush on road surfaces have complicated travel and may have contributed to early-morning traffic incidents on major highways.
Interstate 95 is a critical north–south transportation corridor along the U.S. East Coast, carrying thousands of vehicles daily, including commuter traffic and commercial freight.
Closing segments of I-95 in the Stonington area had immediate consequences:
Travel delays for morning commuters relying on I-95 to reach work, appointments, or regional connections.
Diversion of truck traffic and disruption to long-haul freight movement along the busy interstate.
Increased congestion on local and alternate routes as drivers sought to bypass the closure.
CT DOT and police urged drivers to monitor traffic updates via navigation systems and local traffic alerts, and only travel if necessary until the closure is lifted.
Traffic crews and state police remained on scene throughout the morning, assisting with clearing the crash debris and reopening the highway as quickly and safely as possible.
Jackknifed trailers can obstruct multiple lanes and require heavy-duty tow trucks, particularly when the incident occurs on major interstate routes.
Authorities have not yet released details on what caused the truck to jackknife, nor whether weather, vehicle condition, driver factors, or road conditions played a role.
Officials typically review crash scene evidence, take statements from drivers and witnesses, and examine vehicle telemetry as part of their probe.
Motorists with dash cam footage or information from the time of the crash were encouraged to share it with Stonington police to aid the investigation.
