The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m., according to Penampang District Police Chief, Supt Sammy Newton.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcycle collided with the rear of a car, causing the motorcycle to catch fire.

The rider was immediately rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver of the car was reported unharmed.

“Initial investigations found that the motorcycle crashed into the rear of the car, causing it to catch fire,” Supt Newton said.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police have urged all road users to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to exercise caution at all times to prevent similar tragedies.

Residents and witnesses at the scene described the collision as sudden and violent, noting that the road is a heavily trafficked route connecting Kota Kinabalu with Papar, making it a high-risk corridor for commuters and motorcyclists.

Emergency services responded swiftly, containing the fire and clearing the roadway to restore traffic flow.

Authorities have requested that anyone with information about the incident contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Penampang District Police Headquarters.

This incident underscores the risks faced by motorcyclists in Sabah, where road collisions remain a leading cause of fatalities.

Safety experts continue to advocate for improved road conditions, adherence to speed limits, and protective gear for riders, especially on busy commuter highways.
