The crash occurred near the busy intersection of Bradford Avenue and Madison Avenue, prompting a large emergency response and ongoing investigations by multiple law enforcement agencies.

At approximately 7:40 p.m., officers with the Anaheim Police Department observed a dark-coloured Jeep Gladiator being driven recklessly in the area of Mira Loma and Lawrence avenues and attempted to stop the vehicle.

According to police statements, the driver accelerated instead of complying, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit with lights and sirens activated.

Witnesses described the suspect’s vehicle travelling at high speeds through residential streets, narrowly missing other motorists as officers trailed behind. Less than three minutes into the pursuit, the fleeing vehicle crashed violently into two other cars near the intersection of Bradford and Madison avenues in Placentia.

The driver of one of the struck vehicles, a Placentia man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders from the Placentia Fire and Life Safety Department.

Investigators have confirmed that he was not connected to the police pursuit and was simply driving in his own vehicle when the collision occurred.

An 83-year-old woman, driving a second vehicle impacted in the collision, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and is expected to recover.

The suspect identified as 21-year-old Darwin Felipe Bahamon Martinez was arrested at the scene on charges including felony evading police and vehicular manslaughter.

Martinez remains in custody pending formal charges, and authorities have not yet released details about possible contributing factors like substance use or impairment.

Following the crash, the California Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was called in to handle the technical investigation of the collision and determine what led to the suspect’s loss of control and impact with other vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Placentia Police Department’s criminal investigation unit is probing the actions of the suspect and the decisions made during the pursuit.

Emergency crews initially closed the intersection as debris and wreckage were cleared, and traffic was diverted around the scene into the late evening hours.

Neighbourhood residents reported hearing a loud impact and seeing extensive vehicle damage when they arrived moments later.

Locals described the crash as a “heartbreaking tragedy,” especially given the victim’s apparent innocence.

One witness recounted the loud crash and their shock upon seeing the damaged vehicles strewn across the intersection.

Community leaders and neighbours have expressed concerns about high-speed pursuits in residential areas, calling for a review of policies to avoid similar outcomes in the future.

Traffic safety experts note that pursuits through residential streets can present serious risks to bystanders and innocent motorists.

Factors like excessive speed, unpredictable manoeuvres, and proximity to intersections are linked with heightened severity in crashes during law enforcement activities.

Analysts emphasise the importance of calibrated decisions by pursuing officers to safeguard the public while apprehending suspects.
