Nigerians to pay higher for number plates and driver’s license- FG

Effective from November 1, 2024, it has been determined by the federal government that vehicle owners will be required to remit the sum of N21,000 for a five-year driver’s license and N15,000 for a three-year driver’s license
This adjustment in rates has been implemented subsequent to a comprehensive review that was recently sanctioned by the esteemed Joint Tax Board (JTB).
Furthermore, it has been established that the revised fees for acquiring a five-year and three-year driver’s license for motorcycles and tricycles will amount to N11,000 and N7,000, respectively.
However, it is important to note that Mr. Olusegun Adesokan, the esteemed secretary of the JTB, has explicitly stated in a circular that the approval for these increased rates is contingent upon the Federal Road Safety Corps’ ability to effectively educate and sensitize the general public regarding this increment.
This measure has been taken to ensure that all citizens are well-informed and prepared for the changes.
Additionally, as a result of the aforementioned rate review, it is expected that Nigerians will now be required to pay a minimum of N30,000 for a standard private vehicle number plate and an equivalent amount for a standard commercial vehicle number plate.
For those seeking a more personalized touch, a fancy number plate will now incur a cost of N400,000, while a motorcycle number plate will be priced at N12,000.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that a dealer (motor vehicle) number plate will now be priced at N100,000.
According to Adesokan, “the secretariat has requested that the FRSC notify the JTB of its public engagement and sensitisation plans. This is to enable relevant inputs where necessary, as we are confident that a very robust engagement arrangement will ensure the seamless implementation of the revised rates as approved by the board.”
These adjustments have been made with the utmost consideration and are aimed at ensuring the continued safety and efficiency of our nation’s roadways.
We kindly request the cooperation and understanding of all citizens as we work towards implementing these changes for the betterment of our society.
In a similar manner, the cost of government fancy motor vehicle number plates has been updated to N120,000, while government standard number plates now cost N80,000.
Additionally, the price for government fancy motorcycle number plates has been set at N50,000, and government standard motorcycle number plates at N20,000.
