Lagos State Gov’t revokes 25% Transport discount – LAMATA

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), has announced that the 25% discount on public transport in Lagos State will end on Sunday, January 28, 2024.
This decision is the last on the pacification measures taken by the State Gov’t to eliminate fuel subsidies.
LAMATA published a statement through its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, January 26, 2024, informing the public that the 25% discount on transportation has ended.
The Ministry advises Lagosians to be aware of the change and prepare for the resumption of previous transport fares as it was before the December discount period.
“The 25% discount for public transport management, transit and railway will end on Sunday, January 28, 2024.” – LAMATA
“Transportation fees on managed services will return to 100% as of Monday, January 29, 2024.”
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu first announced that there will be a 50% discount on state buses and a 25% discount on commercial yellow buses on all routes from August 2, as part of efforts to reduce the impact of petrol subsidies from 2023.
The Governor also announced the expansion of bus service for public servants in Lagos State to support the impact of the withdrawal of subsidies.
What is happening in Lagos State is likely to happen in other states where these palliative subsidies have been introduced.
Let’s hope the federal government doesn’t stop paying government employees the N35,000 relief payments any time soon.
