Ladipo Auto spare parts market mourns
In Ladipo auto spare parts market, precisely at Toyota bus stop along the bustling Apapa-Oshodi expressway in Lagos, a tragic accident unfolded yesterday.
A motorist, in a grievous turn of events, inadvertently caused the untimely demise of a trader within the market premises.
The regrettable occurrence transpired at the early hour of 7:00 a.m., casting a somber shadow over the otherwise bustling marketplace.
Subsequently, at 9:47 a.m., fate played a precarious hand once more as another individual narrowly evaded a fatal outcome when struck by a vehicle at the same bus stop.
Despite the miraculous escape from death’s clutches, the survivor was not unscathed, having suffered the loss of a digit and exhibiting signs indicative of a potential spinal cord injury, rendering them immobile.
It is worth noting that prior to these distressing events, the traders at Ladipo market had fervently implored the Lagos State government to address the pressing need for a pedestrian bridge in the vicinity.
Assurances were tendered by the administration under the tenure of former Governor Akinwumi Ambode, promising the construction of a footbridge to enhance safety in the area.
Regrettably, this commitment remained unfulfilled throughout the governor’s term in office, leaving the community vulnerable to such tragic incidents.
Numerous reports from reputable sources such as The Guardian have underscored the imperative nature of erecting a footbridge in the vicinity to mitigate the risks posed by hit-and-run drivers, whose actions have resulted in grievous harm and loss of life.
In light of these distressing events, it is incumbent upon the relevant authorities to heed the longstanding calls for improved infrastructure and safety measures in the Ladipo auto spare parts market area, ensuring the well-being and security of all individuals traversing the bustling thoroughfare.
Secretary, Ladipo auto spare parts Market, Onyeka Igwe, said: “We have been appealing to the Lagos State government, and we do so every month. The Toyota bus stop axis is very important. But you know the government and how they do things.”
When asked about the government’s response, he said: “They tell us every time that they will look into it and do something.”
He added: “The government is not serious about the project. They would have included it in the budget if they wanted to do it. Ladipo is a critical place but it’s unfortunate that these incidents will continue because the government is not willing to build the bridge.”
According to The Guardian, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, recommended utilizing the nearby footbridge as an alternative solution.
He said: “We used to walk from Five Star bus stop to Toyota bus stop. I worked at The Guardian for over 13 years. I used to disembark at Five Star and walk to the office. It’s not far.”
However, he added: “I will ask the engineer. We will do something about it.”
