16 Killed as Passenger Bus Plunges Under Bridge Along Lokoja-Okene Highway

At least 16 people have lost their lives following a devastating road accident along the busy Lokoja-Okene Highway after a commercial passenger bus reportedly lost control and plunged beneath a bridge in a horrifying early morning crash.
The fatal incident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. on Friday near Aku Village close to Osara, throwing the highway into chaos and grief.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander in Kogi State, Lawal Fagge, the crash involved a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number BUU 17 ZD.
The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Plateau State to Lagos carrying 22 passengers, comprising:
- 21 male occupants
- 1 female occupant
Preliminary findings indicate that driver fatigue and excessive speed may have contributed to the tragedy.
Authorities said the driver lost control while speeding along the highway, causing the bus to veer off the road before plunging under a bridge with devastating force.
The impact of the crash claimed the lives of:
- 15 male passengers
- 1 female passenger
Officials confirmed that several victims died instantly due to the severity of the impact.
The crash scene reportedly left the vehicle severely mangled, with emergency responders forced to carry out difficult recovery operations.
Personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps responded swiftly after receiving distress alerts from motorists and residents.
Rescue teams successfully pulled out six injured survivors, all suffering varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were rushed to Health facilities in Osara and Specialist Hospital Lokoja.
for emergency treatment and medical evaluation.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Ankuri Mortuary.

Reacting to the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps urged motorists and commercial drivers to prioritize safety and strictly obey traffic regulations.
The agency warned against:

- Driver fatigue
