The accident, which occurred on Monday, involved a blue Toyota Corolla car and a commercial tricycle (Keke), according to eyewitness accounts from residents and commuters in the area.
Eyewitnesses told RoadKing.ng that the driver of the Toyota Corolla allegedly drove against traffic on a one-way section of Main Avenue in an attempt to beat congestion and save time.
While speeding through the restricted lane, the vehicle reportedly collided head-on with an oncoming tricycle conveying passengers.
The impact of the crash was severe, instantly killing two occupants believed to be passengers on the tricycle. Others in both vehicles suffered varying degrees of injuries.
Residents and passersby quickly mobilised to rescue trapped victims before the arrival of emergency responders. Injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased were later evacuated from the scene.
Driver Allegedly Works With Ride-Hailing Platform
Eyewitnesses at the scene claimed the Toyota Corolla driver appeared to be operating as a ride-hailing driver, possibly with Bolt, though this has not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.
Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and cordoned off the area to ease traffic congestion and begin preliminary investigations.
Security operatives confirmed that investigations have commenced to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including:
- Whether the driver was officially registered with a ride-hailing company
- The exact speed of the vehicle at the time of impact
- Possible mechanical failure or driver impairment
- The driver of the Toyota Corolla has reportedly been taken in for questioning.
Growing Concern Over One-Way Violations
The crash has renewed public concern about motorists who routinely drive against traffic on one-way roads across Nigerian cities.
Road safety experts warn that wrong-way driving significantly increases the risk of fatal head-on collisions, especially on narrow urban roads with mixed traffic such as tricycles, motorcycles, pedestrians, and private cars.
RoadKing Safety Advisory
- Always obey traffic signs and road markings
- Never drive against traffic, even for short distances
- Reduce speed in built-up areas
- Ride-hailing drivers should prioritise safety over trip speed or earnings
- Saving a few minutes is never worth a human life.
