How Aggressive Overtaking Turns Nigerian Roads Into Death Traps

If there’s one driving behavior almost every Nigerian motorist complains about, it is reckless overtaking. From highways like Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to busy city corridors in Abuja, aggressive overtaking is at the heart of thousands of crashes every year.

Despite clear road rules, drivers continue to gamble with their lives and those of others, simply to get ahead.
Why Drivers Risk It
1. Impatience in Traffic: Many motorists believe overtaking will save time, but studies show most gain less than 5 minutes on long trips.
2. Overconfidence: Young or inexperienced drivers often misjudge the speed of oncoming vehicles.
3. Poor Lane Discipline: On single-carriage highways, drivers force overtakes even where visibility is poor.
4. Weak Enforcement: Though FRSC warns against reckless overtaking, fines are rarely enforced consistently.
The Deadly Numbers
According to the FRSC 2024 Road Crash Report, reckless overtaking was responsible for over 18% of fatal highway crashes nationwide, with the Abuja-Lokoja and Benin-Ore-Shagamu routes topping the list.
One survivor of a fatal crash on the Ore road told RoadKing.ng:
“The driver insisted on overtaking a trailer at a blind bend. The next thing, we were head-on with a bus. I still don’t know how I survived.”
Solutions That Could Save Lives
Driver Education: Driving schools must emphasize overtaking rules, including safe distances and sightlines.
- Road Markings: Clear double yellow lines and warning signs at blind spots are urgently needed.
- Enforcement: Mobile patrols and instant fines must become consistent.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Nationwide media blitz reminding drivers that “Overtaking Wrongly = Overturning Lives.”
Conclusion
Aggressive overtaking may seem like a shortcut, but it is a shortcut to disaster. Until Nigerian drivers embrace discipline, and authorities enforce the law, the country’s highways will remain blood-soaked by avoidable crashes.
