A family returning to Abuja after the Christmas holidays had their journey cut short when their newly acquired vehicle caught fire and was completely gutted on the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway in Enugu State.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon as the occupants were travelling northbound toward the nation’s capital.

Among those present was a woman who could be heard crying, “Jesus help us, Jesus, we need your help,” as flames consumed the vehicle.

The burning car sparked immediate attention from other road users and bystanders, who rushed to the scene in an effort to assist.

However, the intensity of the fire made it difficult to salvage the vehicle. As first responders arrived, the flames had already gutted most of the car.

This incident follows a series of vehicle fire episodes in the region, including a diesel tanker fire that occurred at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway in September 2025, although no lives were lost in that particular event.

Firefighters and officials from the Enugu State Fire Service were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported.

They worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other vehicles or roadside structures.

Security agencies and road safety officials also cordoned off the area to manage traffic and ensure the safety of other motorists, who faced delays as the carriageway was partially blocked by emergency response vehicles.

As of the time of publication, no official statement has been issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) or fire authorities regarding the exact cause of the car fire, and it’s not yet clear whether any casualties or injuries resulted from the incident.

Several witnesses described the scene as distressing, noting that the inferno rapidly reduced the shiny exterior of the vehicle to charred remains within minutes.

One commuter, who asked not to be named, said the fire began without warning while traffic was flowing steadily. “We saw smoke rising, then the fire just took over.

The woman was screaming for help, asking Jesus to intervene,” he told RoadKing.ng.

Social media users in the region also shared videos and messages expressing sympathy for the family and urging drivers to always carry fire extinguishers in their vehicles.

Fire incidents involving vehicles have become a recurring concern on Nigerian highways, particularly during peak holiday travel periods when roads are congested and motorists may be fatigued.

Road safety experts advise that motorists should ensure:

  • Regular maintenance checks, especially on electrical and fuel systems
  • Functional fire extinguishers within vehicles
  • Avoidance of overloaded electrical circuits
  • Immediate stopping at first signs of smoke or unusual smell

Such measures can help prevent small faults from escalating into destructive fires.
