Yet, despite multiple repair contracts, large sections remain unfinished, eroded, and unsafe.

Local communities are now calling for urgent government action as crashes and delays increase.

Current State of Repairs

Incomplete Segments

  • The Umueze–Lokpanta–Okigwe stretch remains a series of muddy diversions.
  • Sections between Aba and Eleme have potholes deep enough to stall low-clearance vehicles.

Flooding Issues

  • Poor drainage causes seasonal flooding in Osisioma and Eleme, worsening pavement damage.

According to FRSC South-East Sector Command (July 2025):

  • Over 78 fatalities have been recorded along the corridor this year.
  • Crashes are primarily due to poor surface conditions, truck brake failure, and overtaking accidents.

Government & Contractor Response

  • The Federal Ministry of Works claims that funding disbursement delays slowed progress.
  • Contractor says heavy rainfall is impacting construction schedule, with target now shifted to Q2 2026 for completion.
