Heavy Rainfall causes flood in Ogun State

In the early hours of the morning in Sango, Ijoko, and Ijako in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, a sudden rain shower occurred on Tuesday.

Regrettably, this precipitation led to a flash flood that engulfed five vehicles and caused significant damage to goods valued at millions of Naira.

According to a report by BusinessDay, the rainfall commenced at approximately 6:00 am on Tuesday, triggering a flash flood that exceeded its usual boundaries.

Consequently, various areas along the Lagos-Abeokuta road, including Sango roundabout, the base of Sango overhead bridge, Tipper Garage, Ijako, and Ijoko, were inundated by the floodwaters.

It was observed that a significant number of drainage systems and water pathways were obstructed by refuse predominantly consisting of single-use plastics (specifically styrofoam).

This obstruction has exacerbated the severity of the flash flood, resulting in the submersion of not only vehicles but also various goods, including bags of cement, bags of rice, and other merchandise valued at millions of Naira.

In an interview with BusinessDay regarding the incurred losses from the flash flood, Mufutau Akande, a commercial driver who operates between Sango-Ota and Abeokuta on a daily basis, mentioned that the sudden morning rainfall and subsequent flood took them by surprise.

He noted that some vehicles were in the process of boarding passengers destined for Abeokuta from Sango-Ota when the heavy rain commenced.

Some of our (commercial) vehicles which used to carry passengers from Sango-Ota, under the overhead bridge to Abeokuta are submerged by the flood this morning. What we usually do on a daily is to park our vehicles along the road in anticipation of passengers.

“So, when passengers come, we load them in our vehicles either from Abeokuta – Lafenwa, Brewery-Olomore roundabout or from Ita-Oshin to Sango-Ota or from Sango-Ota – on the overhead bridge or under the bridge, we pick passengers daily, but this morning was different as some vehicles were flooded and we had to wait until the water subsided, but nobody was washed away, we thank God for that”, A driver told BusinessDay.
