The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has come under public scrutiny following serious allegations that some of its officials extorted commercial bus drivers along the Lagos Coastal Road.

The claims, which gained traction online, have prompted the agency to launch a formal investigation, as concerns grow over accountability and integrity within Nigeria’s traffic enforcement system.

The controversy began after a viral Facebook post by a media platform known as “Objectv Media” accused LASTMA officials of:

  • Arresting commercial bus drivers
  • Impounding their vehicles
  • Demanding ₦100,000 payments before release

The post quickly circulated across social media, triggering outrage among drivers and commuters who already face daily challenges on Lagos roads.

LASTMA Responds: “We Take This Seriously”

In an official statement released on Saturday, LASTMA distanced itself from the allegations, stating that it views the claims with “utmost seriousness.”

The statement, signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, emphasized that the agency:

  • Does not tolerate extortion or abuse of office
  • Is committed to maintaining professionalism
  • Has initiated a comprehensive internal investigation

“LASTMA remains a disciplined, professional and ethically guided government institution that does not, under any circumstances, condone misconduct,” the statement noted.

According to the agency, the probe will be; Thorough, impartial and transparent.

Officials confirmed that any personnel found guilty will face strict disciplinary action in line with existing regulations.

This move is seen as an attempt to restore public confidence and reinforce internal accountability mechanisms.

Whistleblower Invited to Provide Evidence

As part of the investigation, LASTMA has invited the individual identified as Tosin, who made the allegation, to appear at its headquarters in Oshodi.

The agency is requesting:

  • Concrete evidence
  • Verifiable details
  • Supporting documentation to substantiate the claims

“The Authority hereby extends an open invitation… to present concrete and verifiable evidence,” the statement added.

RoadKing.ng Safety Perspective

While investigations are ongoing, this incident highlights a critical issue in Nigeria’s road transport system, the relationship between enforcement agencies and road users.

Key Concerns:

  • Alleged extortion undermines public trust
  • Drivers may avoid enforcement officers, leading to reduced compliance
  • Corruption on roads can indirectly increase crash risks and disorder

For commercial drivers, who already operate under intense pressure, such allegations, whether proven or not, contribute to a hostile and unpredictable road environment.

LASTMA Reaffirms Commitment

Despite the controversy, LASTMA reiterated its commitment to; transparency, professionalism and fair treatment of all road users.

The agency also encouraged members of the public to report misconduct through official complaint channels, assuring that all reports will be treated seriously.

“LASTMA remains resolute in its pursuit of a traffic management system anchored on fairness, orderliness and respect,” the statement concluded.

At a time when Nigeria is pushing for safer and more efficient roads, credibility in traffic enforcement is non-negotiable.
