The incident has sparked a major investigation by state traffic authorities as locals mourn and emergency responders urge greater caution on rural roads.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time when a white Ford Territory SUV and a Toyota HiLux utility vehicle collided in circumstances that remain under examination by the Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) of Victoria Police.
Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a serious collision on Crusoe Road, prompting a significant police and ambulance response.
The female passenger in the Ford Territory, a local Bendigo resident of advanced age was pronounced dead at the scene.
The male driver of the same SUV sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The Toyota HiLux driver, a 25-year-old man from Cardigan Village, also suffered minor injuries and was transported for medical assessment.
Police arrested the HiLux driver at the scene; he remains under police guard in hospital, though authorities have not yet laid formal charges.
Investigators continue to assess whether any criminal offences were committed in relation to the collision.
Detectives from the MCIU are conducting forensic examinations of the crash site and gathering witness statements to determine how the collision unfolded.
So far, officials say there are no immediate concerns about the inherent safety of Crusoe Road itself, but they highlighted that road trauma in rural areas remains a significant issue, particularly as long weekends and summer travel peak.
Detective Inspector Sarah Carmichael emphasised the ongoing risk that rural highways and country roads pose if motorists are not alert, especially when traffic volumes rise.
She urged drivers across Victoria to exercise caution, maintain safe speeds, and avoid distractions.
The crash prompted a temporary traffic disruption in the Lockwood area, with local police implementing traffic control and detours to allow emergency services and investigators to work safely.
Local residents expressed shock at the fatality, with many acknowledging that Crusoe Road serves as a key rural route for residents south of Bendigo.
Community support services have also been engaged to assist family members and witnesses following the tragic outcome.
Road safety specialists say that regional and rural roads often see a higher rate of serious crashes due to higher travel speeds, limited shoulder space, and variable visibility especially when small towns and agricultural traffic are involved.
Authorities reiterated that wearing seatbelts, obeying speed limits, and maintaining focus behind the wheel are essential to reducing fatal crashes in country areas.
They also reminded motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained, particularly when planning long trips on rural routes.
