The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has announced its deep sorrow following a fatal road accident on the night of Saturday, 1 November 2025, along the Opi–Nsukka Road.

One student, Nwankwo Chukwuebuka Chrisantus, a third-year Economics undergraduate, lost his life, and others were injured while heading to a music concert in Enugu by the popular artiste Davido.

According to UNN’s acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Egwu, ten students from the institution were travelling together from Nsukka to attend the show when their vehicle was involved in the accident.

The deceased died at the scene, while the injured were rushed to the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka. Some have since been discharged; others remain in serious condition.

In an official statement, UNN’s management extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and school-community of the deceased.

The school also warned students against “unnecessary or night-time travel” and reminded them to obtain permission from the Student Affairs Department before any off-campus trip.

The institution affirmed its commitment to student welfare and pledged support for the affected students and their families.

While full investigation details are still pending, early accounts indicate that the students’ vehicle – en route to Enugu – was involved in a crash somewhere along the Opi–Nsukka Road.

The road is known for its high‐risk conditions after dark. Witnesses say the vehicle lost control, although specific causes such as speed, driver fatigue or road defects are yet to be confirmed.

RoadKing’s View: Preventable Loss Amid Night Travel

This tragic incident offers stark lessons for students, parents and institutions:

  • Night travel on high‐risk roads is inherently dangerous, especially on routes like Opi–Nsukka, which are poorly lit and have limited emergency response services.
  • Group travel to off-campus entertainment events demands rigorous planning: vehicle condition, driver rest, route familiarity must all be checked.
  • Institutional oversight matters: UNN’s advisory to obtain permission and use safe transport should become mandatory policy.
  • Road safety culture must be reinforced in youth-driven contexts, not just commercial transport.
