A petrol-laden tanker crashed and spilled its contents early Saturday on the busy Kaduna–Zaria Expressway, triggering massive traffic congestion and prompting emergency evacuations, authorities say.

The incident occurred near Jaji in Kaduna State on the morning of October 31, 2025.

According to a statement by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Kaduna operations, the tanker lost control and veered off the lane, resulting in the release of petrol onto both carriageways of the highway.

Officials from the FRSC and NEMA arrived at the scene and evacuated motorists and surrounding traffic. The traffic spill effectively brought movements to a standstill, with vehicles redirected through nearby towns including Amana, Mai Madaci, and Turunku to ease the gridlock.

Furthermore, a temporary diversion has been instituted starting November 1 to reroute traffic until the highway is cleared and deemed safe.

The Kaduna–Zaria Expressway is a major north-bound corridor; any disruption significantly affects commercial supply and passenger traffic.

Spills of petrol from tanker crashes dramatically increase fire risk and extend road closure times, increasing economic cost and crash-risk for other motorists.

The FRSC earlier reported that human factors such as impatience and unsafe overtaking contribute heavily to the crash tally in 2025.

This incident once again highlights the triple threat facing Nigerian highways: vehicle-failure / human error / hazardous cargo. A petrol tanker crash isn’t just a collision, it becomes a hazardous materials accident, a fire risk, and a major transport disruption.

Motorists travelling this corridor should:

  • Avoid the expressway until full operations resume or use alternate routes.
  • Stay alert and reduce speed when passing any spill or crash-scene, even after clean-up begins.
  • Report any tanker or heavy-vehicle showing signs of poor control or speed, especially when carrying flammable loads.

On the enforcement side, the transport authorities must:

  • Accelerate inspection regimes for tankers carrying petrol or other flammables.
  • Ensure rapid deployment of containment and traffic-management teams when such crashes happen.
  • Review route-risk mapping and impose stricter controls on vulnerable corridors.
