Reckless Driving in Edo and Ogun States Leaves 3 Dead, 6 Injured

Nigeria’s highways turned deadly once again this week as two major accidents in Edo and Ogun States left three people dead and several others injured. The twin incidents, one fatal and the other narrowly avoided tragedy, underline the persistent epidemic of reckless driving plaguing the country’s highways.

SUV Crushes Okada Rider and Passengers
On Monday night, tragedy struck near the Ogba River bridge in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. According to eyewitnesses, an SUV driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a commercial motorcycle.
- The motorcycle rider and two passengers were killed instantly.
- The crash scene quickly drew crowds of angry onlookers, many of them fellow commercial motorcyclists.
- Protests erupted, with riders blocking the road and accusing “Yahoo Yahoo boys”, internet fraudsters notorious for reckless road behavior of causing the tragedy.
One protester, Abdullahi Usman, told RoadKing.ng in frustration:
“These Yahoo Yahoo boys do not care about anyone else on the road. The accident was very severe. People are tired of losing loved ones because of reckless driving.”
The Edo State Police Command has since confirmed the accident, promising a thorough investigation and vowing to hold those responsible accountable.
Escape Death on Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway
While Edo was mourning, another scare unfolded hundreds of kilometers away in Ogun State.
On the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, a Lexus SUV reportedly speeding at dangerous levels crashed into a Toyota Avensis carrying six adult men.
- The vehicles were badly damaged, but all six occupants miraculously survived with minor injuries.
- Traffic officers quickly moved to clear the wreckage to avoid gridlock on the busy expressway.
This particular highway has a deadly history. In recent months, multiple crashes have been recorded there, mostly attributed to overspeeding.
Reckless Driving: Nigeria’s Silent Epidemic
Both incidents reflect a grim reality: reckless driving remains one of the deadliest threats on Nigerian highways.
FRSC statistics reveal:
- 30% of road crashes in 2024 were linked to overspeeding.
- Motorcycles account for nearly one in every five fatalities nationwide.
- The Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway alone has recorded over 100 crashes in the past two years.
Despite repeated campaigns, many drivers continue to flout speed limits, ignore road signs, and drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Community Outrage and Demands
The protests in Edo reflect growing public anger. Commercial motorcyclists, who often bear the brunt of road crashes, say they are tired of losing colleagues and passengers to careless motorists.
Their demands include:
- Stricter penalties for overspeeding and reckless driving.
- Increased highway patrols by FRSC.
- Targeted enforcement against “Yahoo Yahoo boys” allegedly notorious for dangerous stunt driving in urban centers.
RoadKing.ng Analysis: Two Incidents, One Lesson
The Edo and Ogun crashes may appear separate, but they share a common denominator: irresponsible driving culture.
Until Nigeria decisively confronts overspeeding, substance abuse behind the wheel, and weak enforcement, fatalities will remain a daily headline.
Conclusion: Mourning, but Still No Change
As families in Edo bury their dead and survivors in Ogun nurse their wounds, Nigeria is left with the same unanswered question: How many more lives must be lost before drivers take road safety seriously?
The FRSC has once again reminded motorists that speed thrills but kills. Yet, until drivers change behavior and authorities enforce tougher sanctions, Nigeria’s highways will remain bloodied.
