RTEAN Removes Secretary-General Over Allegations, Appoints New Leader

In a sudden shakeup at the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the National Executive Council (NEC) has dismissed the sitting Secretary-General, Yusuf Ibrahim Adeniyi, and replaced him with Henry Ejiefor Ugwu.

The decision formally announced after an NEC meeting held on September 25 is the result of alleged misconduct and a breach of trust. As of today, Adeniyi is no longer authorized to act in any capacity as RTEAN’s SG.
RTEAN is one of Nigeria’s major employer associations in the road transport sector. It governs, represents, and negotiates on behalf of road transport companies, freight operators, and employers in the business of road haulage and logistics.
When RTEAN leadership is in flux, it ripples across:
- Policy advocacy — how the sector’s interests are represented before government
- Regulation & compliance — disciplinary, licensing, and employer-worker issues
- Collective bargaining and labor relations — especially when disputes arise with unions, e.g. tanker unions or drivers’ unions
So a change in the SG is not just an internal reshuffle, it impacts how employers align with union demands, engage regulators, and maintain stability in operations.
The Dismissal: What We Know
- Allegations & Investigation
The NEC formed a seven-member investigative committee to probe claims of misconduct and breach of trust against Adeniyi.
Their report recommended his immediate removal. - New Appointment
Comrade Henry Ejiefor Ugwu has been appointed SG with immediate effect.
All stakeholders, government agencies, unions, member companies have been notified to recognize Ugwu henceforth. - Pushback & Legitimacy Issues
Adeniyi had been suspended earlier (in August 2025) over similar allegations. He reportedly contested the legality of that suspension.
Observers are watching whether Adeniyi will challenge the decision, how factions may respond, and how the transition is managed.
Implications for Road Transport & Employers
- Disruption in Advocacy & Negotiation
A leadership transition can stall ongoing talks with government, unions, or industry bodies. For instance, contracts, permits, or policy adjustments may linger unresolved. - Uncertainty for Employers & Operators
Transport companies may be unsure which leader’s directives to follow during the transition especially when it comes to collective bargaining or compliance with regulatory changes. - Potential Clashes with Unions
With RTEAN’s SG in the spotlight, unions (including drivers’ or transporter unions) may exploit the window to press for concessions or destabilize employer confidence. - Reputation & Trust Risk
Accusations of misconduct and trust breach at the top can erode member confidence. Employers might question transparency, governance, or accountability within RTEAN.
RoadKing.ng Take & Outlook
This shakeup is more than a boardroom drama. It signals that the road transport employers’ front is entering a period of uncertainty. How this transition is handled could strengthen or weaken employer’s leverage in the sector.
- If Ugwu leads decisively and transparently, the sector might stabilize faster.
- If factions resist or legal contests arise, the fallout could slow road transport operations, especially in areas where negotiation with unions or regulators is critical.
