A private Toyota Sienna crashed into a deep, water-filled pothole, swerved uncontrollably, and rolled off the highway, colliding with a drainage culvert near Gegu Junction. A Road That Eats Its People.

All four occupants, a father, his wife, and their two children (ages 6 and 10), were confirmed dead on the scene by FRSC officials.

Eyewitness Haruna Lawal described the moment:

“The road there is a deathtrap. If you don’t know it well, once your tire dips into that hole, your car becomes airborne. That’s what happened here. The car flipped twice.”

The Abuja-Lokoja highway is notorious for long-standing potholes that; are worsened by poor drainage and floodwater, get deeper each rainy season and often left unfixed despite numerous reports.

Several community residents in Gegu say they’ve written multiple letters to the Federal Ministry of Works, but no permanent solution has come.

According to Corps Commander Ibrahim Joda, who responded to the crash said;

The Sienna was on moderate speed but hit a water-covered pothole, no road signs or reflectors. The accident could have been avoided with proper road maintenance
