5 Common car maintenance mistakes

In this article, Roadking.ng will reveal common Car maintenance mistakes and neglect car owners make.

It’s easy to take things for granted when your car is running smoothly, but at some point, something can go wrong, often without warning. Ignoring problems or neglecting basic checks on your vehicle can cause permanent damage and shorten the expected lifespan of your vehicle.

Here are some of the most common car maintenance mistakes you make and why they can be bad for your car.

1. Failure to check Tire pressure

Checking your tire pressure is important for three main reasons: fuel economy, flat tires, and road safety. If the tire pressure is too low, the contact with the road will be uneven and the tire will wear out.

This also increases the rolling distance from the road. You may not notice the extra resistance, but you will definitely notice the extra weight on the pump. You will find that your tires are low on air and need to be refilled more often.

2. Neglecting to change the Engine oil

Newer cars require oil changes less frequently, but they are still necessary. Even if your car is new, if it doesn’t have a check oil light, it needs an oil change every 8,000 to 10,000 miles. Degraded oil will damage your engine over the long term.

3. Ignoring bad windscreen Wipers

Old wipers can affect visibility in bad weather and leave streaks across your windshield. To determine if your windshield wipers need to be replaced, check for cracks in the wiper blades or if they remove moisture from the windshield unevenly.

If in doubt, replace every 6 months. It’s worth spending a little more money on high-quality wipers.

4. Using old engine air filters

Engine air filters should be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. However, if you primarily drive on dirt roads, you may need to change them more often.

Engine air filters are simple but important because they maintain airflow to the engine. As you drive, the filter gets dirty and may become clogged over time.

This can restrict airflow and put unnecessary strain on the engine. For repairs, go to a reputable repair shop.

5. Get a competent Mechanic

When you have a problem with your car, it’s common to take it to a repair shop to get it repaired.

However, not all of them offer good service at affordable prices. Being educated is the best way to stay away from rip-off schemes.

Before you leave, research online about the problems your car is having. For example, this can help determine how much similar repairs will cost.

Under consumer law, you have the right to be charged a reasonable amount for repairs at a workshop.

To find out how much a particular repair will (reasonably) cost, check out other repair shops and get quotes before spending a lot of money unnecessarily.

To avoid hidden costs, be sure to check whether the quoted price is estimated or whether it includes labor, parts, and VAT.

Check to see if the part is under warranty. Most reputable repair shops offer this, but be sure to ask before handing over your cash.
