Update on Road Construction
Anambra: Residents lament over poor quality of road construction

Concerns have been raised by residents regarding the quality of road construction in the vicinity, particularly in light of recent rainfall that led to the destruction of the newly constructed Ochanja Market Road.

This road, situated in the Woliwo community within the Onitsha South local government area of Anambra State, was completed a mere week ago under the direction of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Following an afternoon downpour, the road succumbed to the elements, with the asphalt surface visibly eroded and scattered in various sections, now water-logged.
A widely circulated video captured on Monday night vividly illustrates the extent of the damage incurred.
In response to this unfortunate event, local residents have voiced their apprehensions regarding the perceived substandard quality of infrastructure projects undertaken by the Soludo administration.
Despite substantial financial investments from taxpayers into these initiatives, concerns persist regarding the durability and efficacy of the executed works.
“The “Dubai-Taiwan” Ochanja market road in Onitsha constructed with billions of Anambra taxpayers’ money has just been washed away by just one episode of 20 minutes rainfall on Monday 25th of March 2024
“The rainfall exposed the nature of poor quality jobs executed by the government.”
It added, “Just a few weeks ago, at the same Ochanja Market, a storey building under construction by the same government collapsed, killing an unknown number of people.
“By the time the rainfall is fully established in June, more poorly executed construction by the Anambra State Government could be laid bare for the blind to see.”
The individuals in question expressed their curiosity regarding the significant erosion of a road that had been completed just a week prior, following a mere 20 minutes of rainfall.
They also pondered the potential implications for other roads completed by the government, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming month of June.
A portion of the social media post that accompanied the video contained the following statement: “Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s recently constructed road, which was only a week old, was swiftly eroded in a matter of seconds.”

At present, there has been no official response from the state government regarding the widely circulated video and the reasons behind the impact on the local market.
