FRSC Intensifies Nationwide Highway Patrol to Reduce Road Crashes

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified patrol activities on major highways across the country as part of renewed efforts to reduce the alarming rate of road crashes and improve compliance with traffic regulations.
The nationwide operation comes amid growing concerns over crashes caused by speeding, dangerous overtaking, overloading, distracted driving, and poor vehicle maintenance.
The Corps says increased visibility of patrol teams will serve as both a deterrent to traffic offenders and a rapid response mechanism for road emergencies.
According to the FRSC, patrol personnel have been strategically deployed to high-risk road corridors, including major expressways linking key cities and commercial centres.
Officers will conduct routine checks on:
- Vehicle roadworthiness
- Seat belt compliance
- Driver’s licence validity
- Speed violations
- Adherence to other traffic regulations.
The Corps reiterated that its mission goes beyond enforcement, emphasizing that road users will also benefit from public education campaigns designed to promote responsible driving habits.
Focus on Preventing Fatal Crashes
Road safety experts have consistently identified human error as the leading cause of crashes in Nigeria.
- Excessive speeding
- Fatigue
- Reckless overtaking
- Drunk driving
- The use of mobile phones while driving
All these continue to contribute significantly to fatalities on the nation’s highways.
With the enhanced patrol operations, the FRSC hopes to reduce preventable crashes by ensuring motorists comply with established safety standards before accidents occur.
Advice to Motorists
The Corps urged drivers to:
- Observe approved speed limits.
- Avoid dangerous overtaking.
- Always wear seat belts.
- Refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Ensure vehicles are mechanically sound before embarking on trips.
- Take adequate rest during long-distance journeys.
Passengers were also encouraged to speak up whenever drivers engage in unsafe practices, noting that road safety is a shared responsibility.
RoadKing Safety Perspective
Road safety cannot be achieved through enforcement alone. While intensified highway patrols will help improve compliance, lasting success depends on responsible driving, proper vehicle maintenance, quality road infrastructure, and continuous public awareness.
Every driver has a role to play in making Nigerian roads safer. Obeying traffic laws, respecting other road users, and maintaining vehicles properly remain some of the most effective ways to prevent crashes and save lives.
