The fatal accident occurred during peak commuter movement near the Sagamu interchange axis, involving multiple commercial vehicles and a private car travelling toward Lagos from Ibadan.
Eyewitnesses reported that the collision happened shortly after 6:30 a.m., when a speeding articulated truck allegedly lost control and rammed into slow-moving traffic caused by ongoing road maintenance works.
According to preliminary accounts gathered at the scene, visibility was moderately reduced due to early morning haze combined with heavy vehicle congestion.
Witnesses said the truck driver attempted to brake but failed to stop in time, triggering a chain reaction crash involving passenger buses conveying workers and interstate travellers.
“The truck came at high speed. Vehicles ahead were already slowing down, but it couldn’t stop,” a commuter told reporters.
Several victims were reportedly trapped inside crushed vehicles before emergency responders arrived.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that rescue teams were immediately deployed following distress calls from motorists.
FRSC operatives, supported by police and local emergency responders, evacuated injured victims to nearby hospitals in Ogun State for urgent medical treatment.
Sector Commander officials disclosed that:
- Three persons died on the spot.
- More than nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
- Traffic movement was severely disrupted for over two hours.
Damaged vehicles were later cleared to restore partial traffic flow.
Recurring Safety Concerns on the Expressway
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, serving thousands of commuters and heavy-duty vehicles daily.
Despite ongoing reconstruction and expansion projects, road safety experts continue to warn about:
- Excessive speeding
- Driver fatigue
- Poor lane discipline near construction zones
- Sudden traffic build-ups
Crash investigations suggest that many accidents along the highway occur when drivers fail to adjust speed approaching maintenance sections.
Authorities Issue Fresh Warning to Drivers
Following the incident, FRSC officials urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during early morning and nighttime travel when visibility conditions change rapidly.
Drivers were advised to:
- Maintain safe braking distance
- Obey speed limits near construction zones
- Avoid reckless overtaking
- Ensure vehicle braking systems are functional
Officials emphasized that most highway crashes remain preventable through responsible driving behavior.
RoadKing.ng Safety Insight
Today’s tragedy once again highlights a persistent danger on Nigerian highways, speed mismatch between heavy trucks and slower commuter traffic.
Safety analysts note that proactive speed reduction signage, advance warning systems, and stricter enforcement around construction zones could significantly reduce similar incidents.
As traffic volumes continue to rise nationwide, coordinated driver education and enforcement remain critical to preventing avoidable loss of lives.
