The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating the circumstances that led to the crash, which unfolded as the vehicle left the roadway and overturned, trapping occupants before emergency crews could extract them.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on Highway 168 between the two intersections with Wawbeek Road.

A Ford Expedition travelling westbound abruptly veered off the road for reasons yet unknown, struck a ditch and culvert, became airborne, and then came to rest on its side on the shoulder.

Responding firefighters from the Walnut Hill and Century stations of Escambia County Fire Rescue worked to free the vehicle’s occupants.

The driver, a woman in her 30’s, was trapped inside the SUV for an extended period while crews used hydraulic rescue tools, including cutting the roof and removing the windshield, to extricate her safely.

Escambia County EMS transported both the driver and a 17-year-old female passenger to Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment.

A second 17-year-old female passenger, who was more seriously injured, was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition after initial assessment and stabilization at the scene.

At this time, police have not released the identities of those involved, nor have they disclosed the extent of their injuries beyond the serious condition of the airlifted teen.

The Florida Highway Patrol has taken the lead in investigating the cause of the crash.

Officials typically analyse factors such as speed, vehicle control, road conditions, and possible impairment as part of their inquiry, though no such details have yet been confirmed in this case.

Law enforcement and road safety experts remind motorists that rollover crashes can occur suddenly, especially when a vehicle leaves the roadway and impact forces cause it to tip.

Rollover collisions often result in serious injuries due to the lack of structural protection once a vehicle is on its side or roof.
