The students, returning home to Sokoto State after a school excursion, were involved in a collision with a commercial vehicle around 4:30 PM, according to Punch. The incident occurred near Gwandu, with the students rushed to Kebbi State Specialist Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle carrying the students reportedly lost control and collided with a commercial bus.

All 13 students survived but sustained varying injuries, fractures, bruises, and concussion symptoms.

Local eyewitnesses mentioned narrow shoulders, poor signage, and inadequate lighting as contributing factors.

Government & Community Response

Governor Idris visited the hospital, personally assuring families that all medical expenses would be covered. In his statement:

“These are our future leaders and guardians of tomorrow. No expense should come between them and full recovery.”

Parents expressed relief and gratitude, praising the governor’s prompt action, which helped “ease our worst fears.”

Road Safety Concerns

The Yauri–Sokoto Expressway has been previously flagged for:

  • Narrow margins
  • Lack of proper reflectors
  • Few emergency lanes

Road safety experts liken it to a “death corridor” during peak travel times, calling for immediate maintenance and upgrades, especially around school routes.

RoadKing.ng Editorial Take

While it’s commendable that the governor stepped in swiftly, this incident exposes deeper issues:

Unsafe roads near school zones

Insufficient roadside lighting and signage

Absence of dedicated school-route safety protocols

We urge federal and state authorities to collaborate on upgrading this route. School trips shouldn’t turn into danger missions.
