Mother, Son Survive Horrific SUV Overturn Crash in Lagos

A mother and her son narrowly escaped death after their vehicle overturned multiple times along the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos State, highlighting once again the growing dangers of high-speed urban driving on Nigeria’s busy roads.

According to verified reports, the accident occurred near the NYSC Bus Stop corridor, a traffic-heavy stretch frequently used by commuters, commercial buses, and private motorists traveling between Lagos suburbs.
Eyewitnesses said the Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) lost control before somersaulting repeatedly on the roadway, causing panic among nearby motorists and pedestrians.
Fortunately, both occupants survived the terrifying crash.
Preliminary accounts indicate that the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while in motion, leading to multiple rollovers before the SUV finally came to a stop.
Although authorities are yet to release a full technical investigation, road safety observers believe factors commonly linked to such crashes may include:
- Excessive speed
- Sudden steering correction
- Poor road surface balance
- Tire instability
- Driver reaction under traffic pressure
The LASU–Isheri axis has previously recorded several loss-of-control accidents due to dense traffic interaction between private vehicles and commercial transport operators.
Good Samaritans and nearby road users quickly rushed to the scene after the crash.
Witnesses helped pull the mother and her child from the damaged vehicle before emergency responders arrived.
Despite the severity of the rollover, both victims reportedly sustained non-fatal injuries, an outcome many described as miraculous considering the extent of vehicle damage.
One witness reportedly said:
“The car turned several times. People thought nobody would survive.”
Why Rollover Crashes Are Extremely Dangerous
Vehicle rollover accidents remain among the deadliest forms of road crashes worldwide because they often involve:
- Roof collapse
- Passenger ejection
- Multiple impact forces
- Loss of cabin protection
SUVs, while structurally strong, possess a higher center of gravity, making them more vulnerable to overturning when sudden steering or speed imbalance occurs.
According to transportation safety studies, loss-of-control incidents account for a significant percentage of serious urban crashes in developing traffic environments.
RoadKing Safety Analysis
This incident reinforces a recurring safety lesson:
Survival in rollover crashes often depends on seatbelt usage and speed control.
Road safety experts advise drivers to:
- Reduce speed near bus stops and pedestrian zones
- Avoid aggressive lane switching
- Maintain stable steering inputs
- Ensure tire pressure and suspension systems are properly maintained
Urban expressways are not race corridors, especially during peak movement periods.
Lagos remains Nigeria’s busiest traffic ecosystem, where congestion, impatience, and risky maneuvering frequently combine to produce avoidable crashes.
Safety analysts warn that many urban accidents today are no longer caused solely by bad roads but increasingly by driver behavior and reaction errors.
RoadKing.ng Safety Reminder
If your vehicle begins to lose control:
- Do not slam brakes suddenly
- Hold steering firmly
- Ease off acceleration gradually
- Allow vehicle stability systems to recover traction
Small decisions within seconds often determine survival.
