BRT Bus Collision on Third Mainland Bridge

On Monday afternoon, a routine commute turned into a nightmare as a Toyota Coaster bus collided with a stationary Lagos State BRT bus on the bustling Third Mainland Bridge.
The accident, which left at least four people with serious injuries, underscores the dangers posed by reckless driving and inadequate road safety measures.
At approximately 5:25 p.m., the Toyota Coaster bus was navigating the busy bridge, heading toward Iyana Oworo.
Witnesses reported that the driver, in an apparent attempt to overtake another vehicle, veered dangerously close to the edge of the lane.

Tragically, the maneuver went awry as the bus struck a stationary Lagos State BRT bus parked by the roadside for reasons yet unknown.
The impact of the collision was catastrophic. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the front section of the Toyota Coaster bus crumpled from the force of the crash.
Passengers inside the bus were thrown violently forward, some sustaining severe injuries.
Within moments of the collision, onlookers placed frantic calls to emergency services.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, dispatched a team to the scene.
Arriving promptly, responders found four victims, two males and two females suffering from serious injuries.
Medics on-site provided immediate care to stabilize the injured before transferring them to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
Their conditions, while critical, were reported as stable at the time of transport.
In his statement, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the agency’s swift response to the distress call.
He emphasized the importance of caution while driving and the need for vehicles to be parked in safer, designated areas to prevent such incidents.
“On arrival at 1735 to the incident scene, LRT discovered that a white Toyota Coaster bus, Registration Number KJA-380-XV collided with a parked Lagos State BRT, Registration Number AGL938-YD while on motion resulting in significant damage and injuries.” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the parked BRT bus and whether any safety protocols were breached.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge was heavily congested for hours, as emergency teams worked to clear the wreckage and restore normalcy.
