How to become a Driver in Nigeria

To become a driver, you generally need to follow these steps:

1.Meet Age Requirements

Ensure you meet the minimum age requirement for driving in your location.

Ensuring that you meet the minimum age requirement for driving is crucial for personal safety, road safety, and avoiding legal consequences. By patiently waiting and using the time to develop necessary skills, an individual can approach driving with confidence and contribute to a safer community on the road

2. Obtain a Learner’s Permit

Take and pass the written test to get a learner’s permit, allowing you to practice driving under certain conditions.

The following are the procedure for obtaining learner’s permit in Nigeria;

1. Pay prescribed fee
2. Attend a driving school approved by FRSC
3. You must obtain a pass from driving school with third issue learners permit
4. Drive for at least 3 months accompanied by an Instructor who is a licensed driver.
5. Affix ‘L’ sign on the front and rear of the vehicle
6. Tested by the appropriate authority after the third issue of the learners permit for a period not less than 3 months.

3.Driver’s Education

Consider taking a driver’s education course, which may be required in some places and can provide valuable knowledge.

Depending on the type of driving you want to do, you may need additional training or certification, such as commercial driver’s license (CDL) for truck driving or specialized training for operating certain vehicles.

4. Practice Driving

Spend time practicing your driving skills in various road and weather conditions to become a confident and competent driver.

Log the required practice hours with a licensed adult before taking the driving test. Once ready, schedule and take the driving test to demonstrate your skills.

5. Understand local regulations

Familiarize yourself with local traffic laws, regulations, and road signs to ensure you are driving safely and legally.

Stay updated Keep up with any changes in driving laws, technology, and safety practices to maintain your skills and knowledge as a driver.

6. Get a Full License

Upon passing the driving test, you’ll receive a full driver’s license, allowing you to drive independently. Also, you will need to meet the age and eligibility requirements in your area and pass a written and practical driving test to obtain a driver’s license.

7. Maintain Safe Driving

Always follow traffic rules, drive responsibly, and stay updated on any license renewals or requirements.
