Three Killed and Four Journalists Injured in Deadly Crash on Enugu–Onitsha Expressway

At least three people were killed and four journalists sustained injuries in a tragic road collision earlier today on the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest transportation corridors linking the South‑East to major commercial hubs in the North.
Emergency responders and highway patrol units rushed to the scene after distress calls signaled a major collision involving a commercial passenger bus and a private vehicle just past the Omagba junction near Enugu.
According to initial eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports from officials present at the scene:
- The crash occurred in the early morning as vehicles were moving heavily along the expressway.
- A commercial passenger bus and a private saloon car collided under circumstances still under investigation.
- Journalists from a regional media house were reportedly traveling to cover an event when their vehicle became embroiled in the collision.
Witnesses indicated that poor visibility and high speed may have been contributing factors, although authorities are yet to confirm this officially.
Emergency medical teams deployed from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and state health services attended to victims at the crash site before transferring them to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu.
Officials confirmed that:
- Three passengers died instantly from injuries sustained at the point of impact.
- Four journalists both male and female were injured and are currently receiving treatment. Their conditions range from serious to moderate, with at least two in critical care.
- Several other passengers escaped with minor injuries.
FRSC operatives indicated that families of the victims have been notified where possible, and investigations are underway to establish full identities.
In a brief statement, the FRSC Sector Commander for Enugu State described the crash as “deeply saddening” and reiterated the Corps’ commitment to preventing such tragedies.
An ongoing investigation will focus on several possible factors including:
- Vehicle speed and compliance with posted limits,
- Road visibility conditions at the time,
- Mechanical status of the bus involved,
- Driver fatigue or error.
Authorities also confirmed that the expressway was temporarily cordoned off to facilitate rescue operations and prevent secondary collisions.
Reactions from Journalists’ Associations
Leaders from several press associations condemned the crash, emphasizing the need for safer travel conditions for media professionals who regularly traverse major highways for coverage.
In a statement issued by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the association said:
“Our colleagues risk their lives daily to deliver news. We call on road safety agencies and government authorities to implement stronger protective measures for journalists on the road.”
A Critical Transport Artery With Rising Crashes
The Enugu–Onitsha Expressway is a major lifeline for commercial and passenger traffic connecting the South‑East with northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Its heavy usage has often been accompanied by periodic traffic chaos and frequent road accidents, particularly during peak travel times.
Experts attribute many crashes on the expressway to:
- High speed and overtaking in congested zones,
- Poor adherence to traffic regulations,
- Overloading of vehicles,
- Driver fatigue or distraction.
Safety Advisory Following the Crash
Following the incident, FRSC officials advised motorists to:
- maintain prudent speed limits,
- avoid overtaking dangerously,
- ensure vehicles are road‑worthy before long journeys,
- take rest breaks to prevent fatigue.
Authorities reiterated that enforcement would be strengthened along the Enugu–Onitsha corridor to curb further tragedies.
