The fatal crash occurred when two vehicles collided near a broken-down gas tanker that had been left stationary on the highway, creating a dangerous obstruction for approaching traffic.
According to officials from the Edhi Foundation, one of Pakistan’s largest emergency response services, the accident occurred late at night along a stretch of the Makran Coastal Highway in Balochistan province.
Initial reports indicate that a passenger vehicle traveling along the highway encountered the stationary gas tanker that had reportedly broken down earlier.
As the driver attempted to maneuver around the obstruction, another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction collided with it, triggering a devastating crash.
The violent impact caused severe damage to the vehicles involved and left several passengers trapped in the wreckage.
Emergency teams from the Edhi Foundation rushed to the scene shortly after the crash was reported.
Rescue workers confirmed that:
- Seven people died at the scene due to severe injuries.
- Eight other passengers sustained injuries, some critically.
- The injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Authorities said recovery operations took several hours as rescuers worked to extract victims from the crushed vehicles.
Danger of Broken-Down Vehicles on Highways
Road safety officials noted that the presence of unmarked or poorly secured broken-down vehicles on highways remains a major cause of accidents in many countries.
On high-speed corridors like the Makran Coastal Highway, drivers often have very little reaction time when encountering unexpected obstructions, particularly at night or in low-visibility conditions.
Investigators are currently working to determine:
- Whether warning signs were placed near the stranded gas tanker
- If the vehicles involved were speeding
- And whether poor lighting or visibility contributed to the crash.
About the Makran Coastal Highway
The Makran Coastal Highway is a major transport route connecting Karachi with the coastal city of Gwadar.
The highway runs through remote desert and coastal terrain in Balochistan and is widely used by commercial vehicles, passenger buses, and long-distance travelers.
While the highway plays an important role in regional trade and tourism, authorities have previously warned that limited lighting, vehicle breakdowns, and driver fatigue can increase accident risks along some stretches of the road.
Road accidents remain a significant public safety issue in Pakistan. According to national traffic safety reports, thousands of people lose their lives each year due to:
- speeding
- reckless overtaking
- poorly maintained vehicles
- and unprotected roadside hazards.
Experts say improved road monitoring, stronger enforcement of vehicle safety standards, and better emergency response infrastructure are necessary to reduce highway fatalities.
