Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya described the incident as a heartbreaking loss, not just to the bereaved families but to the entire state.

The Tragic Incident

Gombe governor According to reports, the official, identified as Mrs. Grace Samuel, was traveling with her brother when their vehicle was involved in a ghastly crash along the Gombe–Bauchi expressway. Eyewitnesses say the car veered off the road after a tire burst, leading to a somersault that claimed their lives instantly.

Both siblings were said to be on a family-related trip when the accident occurred, leaving friends, colleagues, and loved ones devastated. Rescue operatives rushed to the scene, but the victims could not survive the impact. Their bodies have since been deposited at the Gombe Specialist Hospital morgue.

Governor’s Condolence Message

In a condolence statement signed by his media aide, Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed shock and deep sorrow over the deaths. He praised Mrs. Grace Samuel for her selfless service and loyalty to the administration, noting that her dedication to duty at the Government House had left a mark of excellence.

The governor also commiserated with the bereaved family, urging them to take solace in the legacy of integrity and service left behind. He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and strength for their grieving loved ones.

A Familiar Pain on Nigerian Roads

This tragedy highlights once again the alarming frequency of deadly crashes on Nigerian highways. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), over 41,000 road accidents were recorded across the country between 2018 and 2023, with tire bursts and speed-related incidents ranking among the leading causes.

The Gombe–Bauchi expressway, like many federal roads, is notorious for poor maintenance, potholes, and lack of road shoulders. Motorists often face hazards from over-speeding, poorly maintained vehicles, and inadequate road signage — a dangerous mix that continues to cut short lives.

Calls for Road Safety Vigilance

Road safety experts have used this incident to again emphasize the need for:

  1. Regular Vehicle Checks: Especially tire inspections, as worn-out tires remain a silent killer on highways.
  2. Speed Control: Drivers must reduce speed when traveling on inter-state roads, even when in a hurry.
  3. Emergency Preparedness: Equipping highways with better response systems and functional toll-free rescue lines could save more lives.
  4. Government Action: Urgent rehabilitation of federal roads, coupled with stricter enforcement of vehicle standards.

Conclusion

The death of Mrs. Grace Samuel and her brother is a painful reminder that no one is immune to the dangers of Nigeria’s roads not even government officials. While the Gombe Governor mourns this heartbreaking loss, the incident underscores the urgent need for better road infrastructure, stricter safety enforcement, and personal vigilance among motorists.

Every crash leaves behind grief-stricken families and communities. Until decisive actions are taken, Nigerian highways will remain corridors of sorrow.
