Our correspondents confirmed that the incident occurred late in the evening, under conditions of limited visibility. Immediate medical assistance was rendered, but the student was declared dead on arrival at a nearby clinic.

Community Shock and Grief

A student and witness, who asked to remain unnamed, described the heartbreak:

“Amina was crossing from campus to meet friends when suddenly a vehicle swerved too fast. The next moment, we saw her fall. We tried everything, but it was too late.”

YSU’s student union has expressed deep sorrow and called for improved road safety measures around the campus during evening hours.

Why It Matters Beyond One Life

Sadly, fatal crashes near educational institutions are not isolated incidents in Nigeria. Poor signage, lack of pedestrian crossings, and inadequate lighting contribute to higher risk, especially on university campuses. According to FRSC statistics, human error and unsafe crossings are recurring causes of such accidents.

Road safety analyst Habibat Bello notes:

“Students and pedestrians around campuses are highly vulnerable. Authorities must urgently install pedestrian crossings, speed-deceleration zones, and adequate lighting near school gates. Tragedies like Amina’s are preventable.”

The Call to Action

  1. FRSC & Local Authorities should enforce speed limits and install barriers around university entrances.
  2. YSU Management should collaborate on campus safety audits.
  3. Community Awareness: Encourage drivers and students to stay vigilant, especially after dark.
