NSCDC Officer Killed, Security Operatives Injured in Ghastly Crash

A tragic accident has claimed the life of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) officer and left five policemen and a soldier injured in a devastating road crash along the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia federal highway in Abia State.
The incident occurred in the Ibeku area when a vehicle carrying security operatives, part of the state’s joint security task force comprising the Police, Army, and NSCDC, veered off the deteriorating road and plunged into a ditch.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the harrowing moment the vehicle lost control on the narrow, poorly maintained highway.
Locals and motorists from the Ihie Ibeku community quickly mobilized to rescue the injured operatives and transported them to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, before additional security forces arrived.
An eyewitness recounted, “There were 10 officers in the vehicle. Sadly, one NSCDC officer didn’t survive, while eight others sustained injuries.
Initially, there were fears that an officer had gone missing after disembarking before the crash, but he was later found alive.”
Reacting to the incident, Governor Alex Otti extended his condolences to the affected families and the leadership of the state’s security task force.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the governor assured that the wounded officers would receive adequate medical attention and pledged the state government’s commitment to their recovery.
Governor Otti also commended the joint security task force for their unwavering dedication to maintaining law and order in Abia State. He reaffirmed his administration’s support for security agencies, emphasizing the importance of their role in protecting lives and property.
The tragic accident has once again highlighted the pressing need for urgent road rehabilitation on the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia highway, a route that has increasingly become hazardous for commuters and security personnel alike.
