At least 71 people have lost their lives in a tragic accident in southern Ethiopia, after a lorry plunged into a river in Sidama state.

The vehicle, overloaded with passengers, many of whom were returning from a wedding, lost control and missed a bridge before falling into the water on Sunday.

Local officials suggest that the overloading was likely a contributing factor to the crash. Among the victims, 68 were men and 3 were women.

Graphic images from the scene show efforts to recover the vehicle and the bodies of the deceased from the river.

This tragedy highlights the ongoing road safety concerns in Ethiopia, where over-speeding and violations of traffic laws contribute to thousands of fatalities each year.
