Motorcyclist Killed in High-Speed Collision Involving SUV in Dunn Area

A tragic motorcycle crash in the Dunn corridor has claimed the life of a rider following a violent collision with an SUV along a busy stretch of NC Highway 55.
Emergency responders confirmed that the crash occurred shortly after midday on Thursday, drawing multiple agencies to the scene, including the Plain View Fire Rescue, Sampson County EMS, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, the motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to preliminary findings from investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 12:06 p.m. near the intersection of NC-55 and Green Path Road.
Reports indicate:
- A white Hyundai SUV was traveling westbound on NC-55.
- The SUV attempted a U-turn in the roadway.
- A 2017 Ducati motorcycle was traveling eastbound behind a construction pilot vehicle.
Investigators say the situation escalated rapidly when:
- The pilot vehicle slowed or stopped due to roadway activity.
- The motorcycle moved to pass the pilot vehicle.
- The motorcycle then collided with the Hyundai SUV in the eastbound lane.
Following the impact:
- The SUV was moved off the roadway.
- The motorcycle came to rest on the right shoulder facing south.
- The rider was ejected and landed on the shoulder area.
First responders arrived within minutes and immediately began lifesaving interventions.
However, despite their efforts, the rider sustained catastrophic injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that next of kin notification had not yet been completed at the time of reporting.
NC Highway 55 was shut down for over two hours between Ira B. Tart Road and Green Path Road as investigators processed the scene and cleared wreckage.
Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes while emergency crews worked to restore normal traffic flow.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has confirmed that the crash remains under active investigation.
Authorities will review:
- Vehicle movement patterns before impact
- Roadway construction activity and signage
- Speed and overtaking behavior
- Driver actions during the attempted U-turn
- Visibility and traffic control conditions
Additional updates will be released as the investigation progresses.
Motorcycle collisions involving larger vehicles remain among the most fatal road crash types globally due to:
- Lack of protective structure for riders
- High ejection risk upon impact
- Limited reaction time in mixed traffic zones
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are significantly more likely to suffer fatal injuries in crashes compared to occupants of passenger vehicles.
This incident reinforces the importance of:
- Maintaining safe following distances
- Exercising extreme caution near construction zones
- Avoiding risky overtaking when visibility is limited
- Strict adherence to speed limits
